Moonlighting in India - What, Why and Should of this HR nightmare

How does moonlighting work?

What, though, is moonlighting? To find out, let's consult the dictionary. Moonlighting is defined by Cambridge Dictionary as "the act of working at an additional job, especially without disclosing it to your primary workplace."

According to rumors, Sachin and Binny Bansal launched Flipkart while they were employees of Amazon. While employed by Zoho, Girish Mathrubootham founded Freshdesk, which is now known as Freshworks. In India, many startups were created by entrepreneurs who were also full-time employees of another company.

Moonlighting is a behavior that practically every knowledge- and services-based company engages into some extent. It is not exclusive to IT services companies. Listings for creative work, such as design, writing, and translation, are abundant on gig job platforms. On these sites, there is demand for even non-creative service-based positions in HR, finance, sales, and marketing, as well as in the legal and educational sectors.

The Opposition Against Moonlighting

Is it moral to moonlight? Most IT executives are against moonlighting and at the very least consider it unethical. Here are a few instances:

1. Since then, Wipro has claimed that it terminated 300 workers for moonlighting for rival companies.

2. While TCS CHRO Milind Lakkad has referred to it as an ethical issue, TCS COO N. Ganapathy Subramaniam sees it as a long-term loss to the industry.

3. Dual employment, according to IBM India MD Sandip Patel, is "not ethically right."

4. Employees who are caught moonlighting will be dismissed, according to Infosys, as it is immoral to work a second job "during or after work hours." A few days later, it made a U-turn.

5. If the customer discovers even a remote possibility of data intrusion, RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka remarked, it will not be tolerated.”

Those Who Work at Night

Other than workers and company executives, several IT veterans are proponents of moonlighting. Here are a few instances:

"Efforts of firms to pin their people down are going to fail," stated Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics & Technology.

The concept is supported by Tech Mahindra MD & CEO C.P. Gurnani, who also promised to implement procedures that would encourage staff to discuss it openly.

Moonlighting for Corporate India Has Drawbacks

Moonlighting for Corporate India has a number of drawbacks, according to corporate professionals, including:

1. division of employee time, effort, and focus between company priorities and individual initiatives decreases personnel involvement

2. IT service providers' breaches of client contracts and misuse of private information using company resources for one's own benefit.

Benefits/Advantages of Employee Moonlighting

Why would someone jeopardize their health and principal employment to moonlight? The numerous perks that come with moonlighting are the main causes for which employees turn to it. Employees may turn to various forms of moonlighting to benefit from things like

1. Ability to generate additional income

2. Possibility of skill development when working on projects in many industries

Makiivka: Russia blames missile attack on soldiers' mobile phone use

Russia has said a new year missile attack that killed at least 89 Russian soldiers happened because troops were using mobile phones, defying a ban. Turning on the phones and massive use of them allowed the enemy to locate its target, officials said. Ukraine says 400 soldiers were killed - and another 300 wounded - in the attack on a college for conscripts in Makiivka, in the occupied Donetsk area. It is the largest number of deaths Russia has acknowledged in the war. Russia said that at 00:01 Moscow time on New Year's Day, six rockets were fired from a US-made Himars rocket system at a vocational college, two of which were shot down. Moments earlier President Vladimir Putin had given his annual new year address on Russian TV.
